Kumawood Is Unique:Shirley Speaks
Award winning movie producer and director Shirley Frimpong –Manso, CEO of Sparrow’s Production has said her piece of mind concerning the state of the Akan movies.
In an interview with Flex newspaper, she disclosed that Kumawood has been able to carve a niche for itself and has eventually become a force to reckon with.
“Kumawood is Kumawood. I don’t think Kumawood is trying to be anything but Kumawood. Ultimately, I expect that they will improve on their craft. I like the fact that they are unique and not trying to contend. They are not trying to be anything but themselves and I always say that some of them are ridiculous while others have great storyline and production,” she said.
She added that, “when it comes to the other side we are trying but there hasn’t been any real breakthrough. It seems well some years ago but it appears to be flat again. We are not giving up and we are going to do our best.” Concluding, she said majority of Ghanaians enjoy Kumasi movies so we shouldn’t take it away from them.
“They are really doing their best, we are doing our best and Nigerians are doing their best as well, hopefully we will have a great African movie industry,” she told Flex newspaper.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso is described as one who seeks to raise the standard of film production in Ghana and Africa by telling progressive African stories as seen through the eyes of Africans.
Her films are also known for their “fierce female leads,” as they portray African women with agency who can be breadwinners and lead complex lives.
